I remember the sinking feeling
in my stomach,
as they asked had the deed been done?
I remember looking at you,
waiting for what I knew was going to come,
the end of the day, you asked,
to speak with me,
alone.
I don’t remember your words,
but I know you thought
you were setting me free
like a bird.
I remember the tears in my eyes
blinking them away so that
no one would see me cry,
and your voice in my head,
echoing the ever repeated phrase
“I’m sorry”
then you turn and leave.
I don’t remember the journey
home but I know I
didn’t break,
that I just appeared a little
distant.
I remember coming home
to a house, soulless, like me.
confusion as I waited,
then spilling my thoughts,
about what you’d done.
my mother’s arms, and tears.
I remember the texture of my phone,
I don’t remember what I wrote,
only buttons pressed,
as I clicked send, asking
for clarification.
